SARBE
8 is designed to provide a multi-role beacon capability within
a single unit. Intended primarily for Military users, the SARBE
8 operates as both a standard RESCUE beacon and a COMBAT SURVIVOR
RECOVERY beacon. A wide range of operational and power management
features are available via the PC based programming system.
In
all modes of operation SARBE 8 may be programmed to operate
on automatic or manual update of position co-ordinates. In manual
update mode the GPS receiver will operate until a 'GOOD' position
fix is obtained. The GPS receiver then powers down and the position
co-ordinates are stored and transmitted each time a data transmission
is called for. The position co-ordinates may be updated at any
time by operating the 'Self Test' lever. In automatic mode,
the GPS receiver powers up every 20 minutes to acquire a new
position co-ordinate.
On
activation, SARBE 8 transmits a conventional COSPAS/SARSAT compatible
swept tone signal simultaneously on 121.5 MHz and 243 MHz. This
is interspaced at 5 second intervals with a data burst containing
the USER IDENTITY (User Programmable) and the Latitude and Longitude
position of the beacon.
The
data transmission enables any rescue aircraft carrying the SARFIND
decoder unti to precisely determine the location of the beacon
and fly directly to it. Rescue aircraft not carrying the SARFIND
are able to locate the beacon using conventional search and
rescue direction finding techniques and equipment. Voice communication
is provided for final 'Talk Down' and survivor confidence.
