SARBE
LAUNCH NEW G2R-ELT – EMERGENCY LOCATION TRANSMITTER AT DSEi
2003
SARBE has launched its latest GPS 406MHz Emergency Location Transmitter
(ELT) at the DSEi exhibition this year.
Designed and manufactured in the UK, SARBE’s latest product,
the G2R-ELT, has been developed alongside the SARBE G2R Personal
Locator Beacon which was launched earlier this year.
ELT’s
are carried on board military, civilian and commercial aircraft
as a method of summoning assistance in the event of a forced landing
where all other communications systems have failed.
The
vital new feature, not previously seen on a SARBE ELT, is the
digital transmission on 406MHz which, through the COSPAS-SARSAT
satellite network gives near instantaneous alert to an emergency
situation.
The
data transmission carries the beacon identity and GPS lat./long.
co-ordinates which allows appropriate rescue resources to be quickly
allocated and deployed to the scene.
Following
the SARBE principal of highly automated activation, the G2R-ELT,
critically for survival purposes, can be activated by G-Switch
in the event of a crash landing or by salt water in the event
of a sea landing. Both these options can be disabled and the radio
manually operated, if required.
An
additional feature, also vital to a Search and Rescue mission,
is that transmissions continue for up to 48 hours giving sufficient
time for even the most remote areas to be reached.
Aircraft
flying under JAR-OPS must be fitted with a 406MHz ELT by the end
of 2004. The regulations for aircraft flying under UK ANO are
subject to a letter of consultation and changes may be implemented
in the future making it compulsory for operators to carry a 406MHz
ELT.
