406MHZ EMERGENCY LOCATION MARKER
AT
DSEi 2005
London-based
Signature Industries has launched the new SARBE BE369/406 ADELM® (Aerial
Deployed Emergency Location Marker) operating on 406MHz.
The SARBE BE369/406 is designed to be deployed from an aircraft
or helicopter at the scene of an emergency incident. Its predecessor,
the BE369, has been used extensively in survival packs loaded
into helicopters and in door exit escape chutes as well as life
rafts onboard wide body jets.
When used with helicopters the BE369/406 is deployed over the
location of survivors when they are in water, along with other
survival equipment such as life rafts. If the helicopter is forced
to return to land, the unit drifts with survivors and allows
dedicated rescue units to return to the scene. The unit is also
stored in the doors of aircraft, for deployment by cabin crew
prior to evacuation using escape chutes.
The BE369/406 transmits to the COSPAS-SARSAT global satellite
system, giving over the horizon performance and alerting rescue
forces to the identity of the craft involved and the area of
the incident. A swept tone on 121.5MHz and 243MHz is also transmitted,
allowing direction finding by surface and airborne SAR units.
An
integral self-test facility is provided. Developed to be shock
and waterproof to 10M, the unit’s
operation can be either manual or automatic. In the latter
mode, the beacon can
be stowed, for example, in a life raft container so that it will
be activated when the life raft is inflated.
Visual indication of operation is provided by LEDs at the top
of the beacon. The unit is powered by a battery with a 5-year
service life.
